Coaching Basketball
Coaching basketball is a fun and rewarding thing to do. Everyone knows that basketball coaches are an extremely important part of a child’s life. They command respect and authority. They are guides, teachers, friends, counselors, and sometimes even parents to the kids they coach. Coaches teach good sportsmanship, grace under pressure and the importance of team work. That is why coaching basketball is so important, because the impact of a coach lasts for a lifetime.

While everyone has a different methodology and perhaps no two basketball coaches would agree on the exact best way to coach, most would agree that you have to start with the basics. You can’t be a good player unless you are in good physical shape. This is why you need to drill your team. While coaching basketball, you should run drills that not only put them in good physical condition, but also force them to improve their reaction times. A kid in good shape with quick reaction times can be molded into a fine player. However, you can’t just focus on drills; you must run scrimmages so that your players understand how the aspects of the game come together.
Perhaps more important than teaching the skills of the game is creating the emotional and mental toughness that is required both in the game and in life. Coaching basketball requires that you expect a lot out of the kids you coach. Not only should you expect them to win, but when they don’t you teach them coping strategies by the way you react. Do you get angry and storm out of the room, or do you talk about the game and devise a way to do better the next time. Your actions and reactions to the success and failures of your players will play a large part in how they deal with their own successes and failures later in life. |
